We-ko-pa, Cholla, Golf Course Review Fort McDowell, AZ

We-ko-pa (Cholla) Golf Course Summary: Located in an Indian Reservation, this golf course relies on the strength of the true desert golfing experience, as the golfer is surrounded by cactus, lizards and desert flowers for the entire round. Although highly rated by many an official list, unfortunately, for this reviewer, the golf holes do not use the desert to its full potential as several holes are repetitive in nature, wide, and sometimes mundane. The golf holes that are least so are reviewed hereafter:
Wekopa, Cholla Hole 1: The first golf hole gives a great view of the desert from the elevated tee and is short enough to tempt the golfer to carry the desert dogleg to leave a very short approach to the green. However, a normal tee shot with an iron will still only leave a short iron to the green.
Wekopa, Cholla Hole 3: The best par three on the golf course is made so by the hill that makes left pin placements almost blind. It is very difficult to tell how much room for error there is on the left from the tee, and the green is wide to accept shots to the right, but is a tough one to putt. (not pictured)
Wekopa, Cholla Hole 6: This difficult par four is made by the drive which is over desert to a fairway running at a 45 degree angle to the player. Anything hit left to be safe will leave a 200+ yard shot to the green, but the more aggressive drive must also carry a series of bunkers cut into the steep hill preceding the fairway. (not pictured)
Wekopa, Cholla Hole 8: A very long par five, but downhill all the way, this hole requires three accurate shots, culminating with the scary approach shot over the wash to the long, narrow green.

Wekopa, Cholla Hole 16: This brutal par four is a long dogleg left. The drive must carry the bunker in the dogleg to leave an approach off less than 200 yards. However, anything pulled a little left will be in the desert. Anything right of the bunker will leave a long approach to an uphill green that deflects shots coming up short back down the hill. Wekopa, Cholla Hole 18: The finishing hole is your standard long par four with water to contend with on the approach and a large collection bunker to the right of the surface.
