PGA West Nicklaus Tournament Course Overview: This resort golf course isn’t the best the Golden Bear has come up with, mostly because houses always surround it, which probably is not his fault. Nonetheless, it does incorporate some of Jack’s usual tricks: wide fairways, tight greens and plenty of sand and water hazards. A lot of the holes are visually pleasing, and best overall golf holes are reviewed below:
PGA West Nicklaus Course Hole 5: This pretty holes is short and features a split fairway with a large bunker bisecting it and then splaying out all the way to the green and wrapping around left. The decision off the tee should be based on pin position as the green is shallow and wide and any shot missing it will leave a difficult chip.
PGA West Nicklaus Course Hole 8: This fun par three has a large “v” shaped green where, depending on the pin placement, the shot can range from relatively simple to downright difficult. The obvious hazard is the lake, but the bunkers long leave a delicate shot back to the green.
PGA West Nicklaus Course Hole 9: The closing golf hole to the front features a fairly wide fairway with the only real trouble lying to its right. However, the farther left you go from the tee, the more diabolical the second shot will be. At 461 yards, it probably won’t be a short iron and the knees will definitely be knocking.
PGA West Nicklaus Course Hole 15: This par five, from anywhere except the back tees is reachable in two, if the player likes hitting fairway wood to island greens. For the normal golfer, however, the fairway is really wide open and the second and third shots will provide the drama as the lake shows up.
PGA West Nicklaus Course Hole 18: The last golf hole is the toughest on the course as not only is it very long with sand and water in play on both shots, but the fairway is also very tight. The approach is the mirror image to number nine, with which the green is shared.
