Old Ranch Country Club Review
Seal Beach, CA
73.4 rating; 133 slope |
Old Ranch Country Club Overview: Located just north of the 405 freeway in Seal Beach, this private golf club features mostly flat golf holes that run around the perimeter of the property and zig-zag through the middle, around large lakes and mature trees. Like many other suburban SoCal private golf clubs, the greens are pretty fast and tough to putt, with tiers or severe undulations. The best holes are reviewed below:
Old Ranch Country Club Hole 2: Long and straight, this par far has a tight drive with mature trees on both sides of the fairway and OB far left. The green is well-protected by sand and is tough to putt. |
Old Ranch Country Club Hole 3: This dogleg left par four swings around a very big bunker on the inside of the dogleg. A driver can clear but, but a very big drive that goes a little right can find the hidden pond. The second shot doesn't really have any water in play but the bunkers definitely can be trouble.
Old Ranch Country Club Hole 6 (left): This par four doglegs to the left and the back tee features a shot between trees. There is water hidden long and right off the tee, but it is tough to reach. The green, like most here, is tough to putt.
Old Ranch Country Club Hole 6 (below): This outstanding par five is the best on the course and sweeps left around a very large lake. The sand trap is the best line if one can fly it as, from there, going for the green is an option. It can also be played as a three shot hole, but water is a factor on every shot hit.

The sand trap is the best line if one can fly it as, from there, going for the green is an option. It can also be played as a three shot hole, but water is a factor on every shot hit.
Old Ranch Country Club Hole 9: This par five is straight away off the tee and has water that is only reachable with a monster drive. It is, however, very much in play on the second shot. The green is slightly uphill, has many bunkers and a steep tier that makes back pin placements the most difficult to access.
Old Ranch Country Club Hole 10: Short and sweet, not much distance is needed off the tee here, just enough accuracy to avoid the water. The green is slightly raised and tough to putt, but should receive short iron shots.
Old Ranch Country Club Hole 12: This is a short, dogleg right par four with a strategic drive; a fairway wood is fine but a faded driver can leave a wedge to the green. However, there is a little "creek" which is more about the uneven lies and thick rough, that awaits an errant shot to the right, and trees can block approaches from the left.
Old Ranch Country Club Hole 14: This is a par five where the third shot is everything (unless one is going for the green in two, of course). The green is fronted by a lake and the slope in front of the green will send shots back down towards it. There is also a hump right of the green that can cause awkward bounces and chips.
Old Ranch Country Club Hole 17: The only real danger on this straight-away par four is the water to the right of the fairway, but said fairway is wide enough to not be too worried. The green is slightly elevated and slopes from back to front, with a greenside bunker that is the main thing to avoid.
Old Ranch Country Club Hole 18: The closing hole is a tough one, usually playing into the wind. There is water all the way down the left and bunkering and mounds to the right of the fairway and green.
