Los Serranos Country Club (South) Golf Course Review
Chino Hills, CA
|
Los Serranos Country Club (South) Summary: This golf course is a bit of an anomaly in the world of golf. This par 74 course (from Jack's Blacks) appears more daunting than it is, even from the “longest tees in California”, which used to be true, but is no longer. Six par 5 holes make scoring well a real possibility, especially since most of the old trees that made the course so difficult have been removed. It is fairly hilly and only provides a few holes of real excitement. Those are reviewed below:
Los Serranos Country Club (South) Hole 1: The first of six par fives (and two back to back to start the day) snakes its way between out of bounds left and hillside right, weaving its way uphill towards the green complex.
Los Serranos Country Club (South) Hole 11: The only truly excellent par 4 on the course is a slight dogleg with a well-framed drive. The aggressive play will carry the bunkers on the right, leaving a shorter shot in to the narrow and well-guarded green. However, if pushed right, trees and long grass will cost a stroke. Los Serranos Country Club (South) Hole 16: The most intriguing of the par 5’s, this short, downhill one provides an opportunity to go for the green in two if a good drive is hit. The approach, however, will be over a tiny pond that has a knack for grabbing a lot of shots. The accompanying green is tiny, so any shot hit in to the putting surface must be played high and soft. Los Serranos Country Club (South) Hole 17: This downhill par 3 has another small pond fronting the green, which must be avoided to not make double bogey or worse. Any shot pulled or hit long, will find bunkers, so the player must be accurate on this tee shot and beat the nerves as all of the trouble is easily visible. (not pictured)
Los Serranos Country Club (South) Hole 18: This signature hole is incredibly long at 673 yards. Any hole of this length requires near perfection with all the shots and the lake that runs from 80 yards out to 120 yards out put another mental note in the player’s mind that must be negotiated.
