Aviara Golf Club at Park Hyatt Review
Carlsbad, CA
75.0 rating; 144 slope |
Aviara Golf Club at Park Hyatt Overview: Located at one of the most posh resorts in California, this golf course is archetypal of the
region, using the natural chaparral canyons and a lot of water features to give
a good variety of holes. The grounds are
immaculate and a few ocean views are afforded, although there are far more
views of the resort and expensive homes surrounding. The best holes are reviewed below:
Aviara Golf Club Hole 5: This hole is an interesting par five with a drive that can stay left or try to flirt with the waste bunker / hazard down the right side. If that can be cleared, there is a chance to reach the heavily elevated green in two, but it is risky as there is an enormous bunker lurking short and right of the green that must be avoided at all costs. (not pictured)
Aviara Golf Club Hole 7: This downhill par four gives the player a fine view of the Carlsbad area and of all the danger, in the form of hillside and canyon surrounding the tee shot. The approach is to a wide and shallow green with bunkers surrounding.

Aviara Golf Club Hole 8: The best par five on the course has a mundane drive that is between the Eucalyptus trees but very wide and slightly downhill. This all works to set up the shot(s) to the green. There is water left and long for the lay-up and water short, right and left of the very shallow green for any approach.
Aviara Golf Club Hole 11: This course has three similar par threes where water hazards and flowerbeds make for a beautiful scene. The third is the most famous with multiple water hazards, but is also the easiest and shortest. The fourteenth is the most difficult with the longest shot and an elevation change. This one fits nicely in between.
Aviara Golf Club Hole 18: By far the most difficult tee shot of the day must thread between the property edge on the left and a large lake on the right. The views of the Batiquitos Lagoon are distracting in a good way. Should the tee shot stay dry, a still difficult approach must carry the water to the multi-tiered green.
