English Turn Golf Course Review
New Orleans, LA
|
English Turn Golf Course Summary: This former long-time host of the PGA tour event in New Orleans is an enigmatic golf course. Normally, the golf course reviews on this website focus heavily on the golf course design and overall "feel" of each entry. In this case, one can see the Nicklaus design with all its usual trappings (wide fairways and small, well-guarded, and often angled, greens). There is also water reasonably in play on at least 15 holes. However, this golf course has fallen from its former glory into pretty bad disrepair (mostly on the back nine), and the green fees have not followed suit, which leaves a bad taste of a very overpriced round, which is too bad since the golf course itself (and the pleasant staff) are worthy of a higher rating than they get here. Still, see the best golf holes below:
English Turn Hole 1: With OB right and water left, the opening drive, while not requiring too much length, needs to be fairly precise. The approach is like so many, with a very narrow and small green that is angled and tough to hit. There are many swales and bunkers awaiting the errant shot.
English Turn Hole 1: With OB right and water left, the opening drive, while not requiring too much length, needs to be fairly precise. The approach is like so many, with a very narrow and small green that is angled and tough to hit. There are many swales and bunkers awaiting the errant shot.
English Turn Hole 2: This dogleg left par five will reward a drive down the left that challenges the bunker and water with a shorter hole. There are trees right on the tee and four bunkers there too. The green itself is narrow and fairly undulating once reached.
English Turn Hole 4: This short par four requires only an iron or fairway metal off the tee to the landing area. The second shot requires a lot of attention as it is played over the water with a nasty little pot bunker long-right.
English Turn Hole 7: This long dogleg right has water and a long sand trap to the left, as well as trees to the right, thus requiring a long and accurate tee shot. The green is once again angled and small.
English Turn Hole 8: A fairly short par three, this one plays slightly downhill to a wide green with water and bunkers making misses problematic in all directions except hole-high to the right.
English Turn Hole 9: Water comes into play on both shots on this medium length par four and the green may be the skinniest on the entire course, making it very tough to hit.
English Turn Hole 10: Avoiding the trio of sand traps right of the fairway is key on this par four to leave a good shot into the green that has bunkers and water short and left.
English Turn Hole 12: This little par three has a ridge across the middle and with the bunkers and water to the right, pin placements back of center are the most difficult.
English Turn Hole 15: This par five wraps around a lake and then sets the green on an island in it, so there are plenty of chances to come up wet along the way.
English Turn Hole 18: The finishing hole is a brute. It is long and has water in play left on both shots, with a large amount of sand on both sides for the drive and the approach as well.
