Sea Cliff Country Club Review
Huntington Beach, CA
73.9 rating; 136 slope |
Sea Cliff Country Club Overview: The suburban country club is surrounded by houses and doesn't really feature the sea (although you can actually see the Pacific from the 15th tee) or any cliffs (unless you include the edge of water hazards looking down from the top of the railroad ties). For the most part, the course has many repetitive holes without distinct character; however, the greens are usually in great condition, very fast, and
impossible to putt unless you have seen them many, many times. So, advantage to the member here, which is why there are so many, and the challenge of this makes the course a better experience the more times you play it. The best holes are reviewed below:
Sea Cliff Country Club Hole 3: The best par three on the golf course is over water and a large bunker. The green is very wide and like most at Sea Cliff, difficult to putt.
Sea Cliff Country Club Hole 3: The best par three on the golf course is over water and a large bunker. The green is very wide and like most at Sea Cliff, difficult to putt.
Sea Cliff Country Club Hole 7: This medium length par four bends right and uphill. Anything hit right is dead and blocked by trees. If not, the angle over the bunkers is also very tough. The green slopes severely from back to front and also a little from right to left, so positioning the ball on the correct side of the pin is key.
Sea Cliff Country Club Hole 8: This is a long, dogleg left par four with trees in the dogleg and a big waste bunker left of that. To the right, however, there is a drainage ditch that will leave uneven lies and a much longer approach, so it is worth it to challenge the corner. The green is perhaps the most docile on the course to putt.
Sea Cliff Country Club Hole 12: This par five is straight away off the tee and doglegs left between a lake left and a large bunker right, about 80 yards from the green. The lake continues to the front left of the green, which is sloped heavily from back to front. So, anything missing short-left or long is dead.
Sea Cliff Country Club Hole 14: The best overall par four on the back nine features a drive where only the large bunker left must be missed. However, the second shot must clear the creek short dumping into the green left of the green. The elevated putting surface slopes mightily and there are even ocean views from the green.
Sea Cliff Country Club Hole 16: This is a good, long, downhill par four that doglegs a little to the right. The drive can find the slope on the left side of the fairway to keep it in the short grass and add distance. The approach is to another steeply sloping putting surface with a big bunker to the front-right/
Sea Cliff Country Club Hole 18: The signature hole is a short par five that is reachable in two if the wind is not blowing, which is rare. There is a lake left from tee to green and it crosses in front and right of the green as well. Thus, water is in play on all shots and the green is a bit of a rollercoaster.
