Royal Links Golf Course Overview: I rarely focus on the non-golf amenities of a golf course, but here, it is fair to say that the golf course clubhouse, keeping in line with the "gimmick" of Royal Links being a tribute to golf in the British Isles, is the most authentic and best part about the experience. Links golf courses are firm and play a very certain way. Although this track is inspired by some great holes from across the pond, it has not been set up as a links course, and thus, although riddled with difficult shots, it falls short of what the name promises. The best golf holes are mentioned below:
Royal Links Golf Course Hole 3: The first par three of the day is inspired by hole #2 at Prestwick (see the rare cross-course link here to my round at that legendary golf course) and, barring the obvious limitation of desert looking nothing like the coast of Scotland, is a pretty faithful representation of how the original plays. |
Royal Links Golf Course Hole 5: This golf hole typifies the course. On paper, this is modelled after #12 at St. Andrews (I've not yet played there) and from the tee one cannot see any of the half dozen bunkers that dot the tight fairway. It is a pretty cool tee shot. Then, the green clearly has a tier and undulations. However, that green, when I played, was very soft, killing the links concept that should be ever-present at a tribute to links golf.
Royal Links Golf Course Hole 10: Not the only place to attempt a replica of the Road Hole from St. Andrews, this one uses a wall and Open Championship style scoreboard to simulate the tee shot over the hotel. The road bunker here is not as deep as the real one and the road is just the cart path, but the angles seem pretty correct and the hole definitely plays very difficult, which is what it should.
